first week of February 2026
Firstly some sad farm news - my number one favorite cow - the Queen - also known as seven went to heaven this week. She was just a few weeks of 15 years old (which is rare for a cow to stay alive in ours and most herds) and as she was so special I had always said she was never to be sold.
She was one of the first cows that my granddaughter Mia saw being born and we were all amazed to see the number seven on her head!
She had 8 calves in her time with us - mostly all herefords as for some reason she didnt like getting in calf to AI (artificial insemination) and none with the number 7 on their heads
She will be missed very much and I could call "seven" and she would come - she didnt like everyone but I like to think that she liked me!
After that sad note onto things finished
Firstly, and stupidly because it was hard!!! I volunteered to crochet together some blanket squares made by my local group. What I thought would be a fairly simple process was not one as various sizes, yarns and tensions were involved and sometimes I felt like I was forcing a square peg into a round hole but I got it done. I think they are going to donate the quilt so I hope it keeps someone warm. I must admit now its together it looks much better than I thought it would!
Ive also continued on my aim to use up my stash of cotton yarn and made two face washers - sorry only one in the pic as the other is already in use. This pattern is Spa Day Facecloth and it makes up well. I used Jo sharp summer DK cotton.
And onto reading-
Two finishes this week
The Keeper of Hidden Books by Madeline Martin. I read this as a physical book. This is historical fiction and is set in Warsaw in the second world war. Its the story of Zofia (who is Polish) and her friend Janina (who is a Jew) and how they undertake to save books that the Nazis have deemed need to be destroyed while working in the library. This was well written and showed me yet again how cruel these times were and also the sadness of trying to wipe certain books that are deemed not suitable off the face of the earth.
This is a four star read for me
Miss Bensons Beetle by Rachel Joyce which I listened to via Audible.
This book was surprisingly excellent. Its the story of Margary, a large woman who is a spinster who wants to set off to New Calendonia to find a rare gold beetle. She employs Enid as her assistant and they are two very different people however through their adventures become great friends. There are sad poignant parts in the book but also many funny moments too.
This is a 5 star listen for me
Well thats it for week one of February -and amazingly Im doing this the day after the end of week 1!!!! Who would have thought
